This job is a lot different from what I was expecting. Honestly, I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t this. When I think of a general manager position, I think that I will have a staff to manage, which I really don’t. I’m basically managing myself, and helping manage the personal training department where needed. It’s sort of frustrating, especially as an assistant manger. When I was hired, I was expected to be helping manage the staff, but I sort of just felt like a glorified cleaning lady, all I did was clean. Which I understand, the club has to be kept somehow, the title of the positions is just misleading. It’s a lot better as the general manger because I am in charge of the club and I’m held more accountable to things, the assistants aren’t held accountable to anything. They don’t have monthly reviews, they don’t make commission, and they aren’t held accountable on sales or cancelations or even the tidiness of the club, it all comes back to me, which can be frustrating because that doesn’t really motivate them. I was more motivated to hang out and whatever I wanted as an assistant manager because I had no goals that had to be met, and looking back on that I feel really bad for my general managers because I probably wasn’t helping nearly as much they wanted. Overall, I think the experience has been really good for me though. Everyday isn’t pretty, but that’s the reality of every job, and I sort of liked being thrown into it in a management position to handle as the boss, somewhat.
